Fun party at Gail and Don's in Meriden.

Calling all Crafters!

Gail T., New Haven Area Coordinator, is looking for family-friendly crafters and others whowould like to participate in a Mensa Marketplace at the
2010 Mensautumn. She thinks even five or six people would make it worth while. There may or may not be a charge for a table. We would probably
run it for three or four hours on Saturday only. Please contact Gail [check Media] if you are interested.

Bylaw Update

A process of updating the chapter bylaws is underway. This is occurring (for the first time in a decade) to allow us to catch up with required changes
from the National Office, and to give members a chance to express their views about aspects of chapter operations such as composition of ExComm,
term limits, elections, financial procedures and other matters. A committee consisting of ExComm members and other volunteers has been looking
things over. Now it's your turn to comment.

Click here to review the proposed changes.

Testing Vouchers

American Mensa has launched "Testing Vouchers," allowing prospects to pre-pay for their testing!

Beginning Aug. 31, prospects can visit the Join area on the American Mensa website directly at
http://www.us.mensa.org/application and
pre-purchase a testing session for $40.  After purchase, prospects will receive a uniquely numbered voucher via email that will allow them to arrive at
testing sites having already paid for the session.

Help Wanted

Dave C. is looking for volunteers who are willing to become proctors. They would have to have a 4-year degree (bachelor's) or above from a college or university, and be willing to test 3-4 times a year. Our current "under serviced" areas are New Haven, Storrs, Torrington, and Amherst. (Especially
New Haven!) It is an opportunity to give back to the organization with very little effort and a strong support network.

Testing is scripted, comes with supplies and materials, and is generally very easy to do. Proctors get to be the ambassadors of the chapter and are
often the first Mensan a candidate ever meets.

Are you a Mensan at Yale?

Having trouble getting to C&W Mensa events in the area? Hans Anderson is starting a Yale Student Mensa registered undergraduate organization just for you. Contact him at hans.anderson@yale.edu.

If you're not yet a Mensa member but interested in joining, email David Collier Testing@CWM.US.Mensa.org for information on joining or for test dates in the New Haven area.

Help Wanted - Looking for a site for MensAutumn 2010

If you have a hotel in mind that you think would make a great location for an RG, click on this link 2010 RG Hotel Check List Rev 05 .pdf to find a document that contains all the specs.

Chapter Members - Prefer Electrons?
You can subscribe to [CWM-Announce] and receive emails sent out by your Calendar Editor ~weekly with updates and reminders of C&WM activities, plus secret links to current and past issues of the Media located on the C&WM Mensa website. There’s no advertising and no spam, and it’s even in color. It’s hands-down the best way to keep up with last minute chapter news, schedule changes, and additional events for our chapter. To subscribe, go to the address listed in Media on the introductory calendar page or you may just email your subscription request along with your name and preferred eddress to Calendar@cwm.us.mensa.org and I’ll take care of enrolling you.

The second way we provide the Media electronically is through the Publications section of American Mensa’s website. Login to www.us.mensa.org , select “Publications” from the bar at the top, then “Local Group Newsletters” from the menu at the left. Look for Media in the dropdown list. While you’re there, you can check out the newsletters of other American Mensa chapters, too. Note: this source only carries the monthly newsletter, not the ~weekly updates.

As a separate option, if any Member wishes to save a few trees and not bother with paper copies anymore, please login to the national website, www.us.mensa.org, click “Profile Update” on the left, and make sure all your information is correct and current, including whatever eddress you want to use. You’ll find a number of checkboxes enabling you to refine how Mensa handles your personal information, as well as a checkbox for letting national know if you prefer electrons over paper. If you change your eddress, don’t forget to notify Calendar@cwm.us.mensa.org to keep your subscription to [CWM-Announce] active so you won’t miss a single thing.

C&WM Mensa Yahoo Group

Joe Wonoski invites fellow M’s to join the fun in the Yahoo e-mail reflector group, where they discuss all sorts of things of interest to the group. Last minute activities, event planning, and any subject imaginable can come up.

Go to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/CWMMensa for all of the details.

Event Reimbursement

Would you like to host an activity for your Mensa friends? How about a house party, discussion group, games night, card party? In order to encourage you, the ExComm has agreed to help you fund the event.

"It was determined that members hosting C&WM events, including committee meetings, that are posted and open to all members (except those barred by legal instrument) may utilize up to $50.00 to be reimbursed from the C&WM treasury following submittal to the treasurer, of a request for reimbursement and documentation.  A larger sum may be allocated upon Loc Sec approval."

So, if you're interested, contact Gisela Rodriguez, Calendar@CWM.US.Mensa.Org, to schedule the event. In order to post an event in the Media, the submission
must be received by the 10th of the month prior to the month in which the event will occur. Save your receipts and forward them to the chapter treasurer for reimbursement. Be sure to include a description of the event, the date and location of the event, your name, address and telephone number. If you have questions, contact the chapter treasurer.

MENSA Admission Testing in C&WM Mensa

The Mensa Admission Tests are composed of two tests featuring questions involving logic and deductive reasoning.  If you score at or above the 98th percentile on either of the two tests, you'll qualify and be invited to join Mensa.

For brainy persons for whom English is a second language, or for highly intelligent dyslexic persons, we also occasionally offer the Culture Fair (non-language) tests which feature questions involving visual logic and deductive reasoning and are not dependent on English reading skills as are the regular admissions tests.  However, any applicants may choose to take the Culture Fair tests, whether or not they have special needs.

It is important to note that our tests are given for the purpose of admission into Mensa and not to provide an IQ score.  A qualifying score indicates that you've tested at, or better than, 98 percent of the general population.  American Mensa will release membership qualification only. No further information on test scores will be released.

We offer test sessions at various times and places.  The tests are administered locally, and then sent in to the Mensa national office for scoring.  Results are usually sent out within 2-3 weeks.

It is also possible to qualify for Mensa membership using previously taken test scores. For more information about this method of qualifying through the use of prior evidence, please visit www.us.mensa.org.

Testing Schedule

The Connecicut & Western Massachusetts chapter of Mensa holds regular testing in Newington on the second Saturday of every month.  Please pre-register to attend by contacting the testing proctor coordinator, David B. Collier at Testing@CWM.US.Mensa.org for more details, including directions.  In addition to the regular testing, additional tests will be made available around the region as candidate interest requires. To register for testing updates, goto http://www.us.mensa.org/directtesting and provide an email address.

Registration:  Anyone seeking admission to Mensa is invited to attend, so bring a friend, or bring the family. Seating is limited, and will be granted first to those with reservations, based on the order in which people sign up, and then to walk-ins, in the order in which they arrive.

If you decide to take our admissions test, please bring:  A  valid photo ID giving proof of age and the $40 payment (plus any coupons or vouchers you intend to use.)  We accept cash, Visa, American Express, MasterCard, Discover or checks made payable to American Mensa, Ltd.  You can also pre-purchase a testing session online as well (Link: http://www.us.mensa.org/testingvoucher). You must be a US resident and at least 14 years old to take the test.  If you are under 18, a parent should accompany you to the test site to fill out the required parental consent form.  Everything else, pencils, scrap paper, test booklets, and answer sheets, will be provided for you there.  We also recommend getting a good night's sleep and a pleasant meal before arriving at the test site.

Contact:  David B. Collier, Connecticut & Western Massachusetts Testing Proctor Coordinator, to reserve a seat, or if you have any questions at testing@cwm.us.mensa.org.  Further information on Mensa can be found at:  http://www.us.mensa.org.  Additional information will accompany registration confirmations.
